Gioachino Rossini / Opera in two acts
The highly successful production of the National Opera of Greece (2013/14) is being revived at the Olympia for four performances, featuring an exceptional cast of performers. Rossini composes an ingenious comic opera full of humor and twists.
The plot is based on Charles Perrault's “Cinderella”, but Jacopo Ferretti's libretto adapts the story to the time when the opera was written. Rodula Gaitanou stages the action in the microcosm of an off-Broadway theatre in New York City in the 1930s, during the period of the Great Depression and the economic crash.
Thus, the story is modernized to highlight social and moral reflections in a time and place that resonate more with today's audience's references.
